The Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is a full fledged, well equipped department that handles all sorts of problems associated with the lung. Some of the diseases for which the Department has facilities for diagnosis and treatment include Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Pneumonia, Interstitial Lung Diseases, Chest Infections, Occupational Lung Diseases, Allergy, Pleural Diseases including complicated Pleural Effusions, Empyemas and Recurrent Pneumothorax, Tuberculusis, Lung Cancer, etc.

The Department has a bedded Critical Care Unit for the management of critically ill patients. The unit has ventilators and non-invasive ventilation devices along with all modern equipment to aid in the treatment of critically ill patients. The unit is manned by well qualified highly trained staff.

A pulmonary Function Lab is being run by the Department which has facilities for Pulmonary function assessment to help in the diagnosis and tyreatment of various obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.


In addition to the General Pulmonary Outpatient Clinics, the department is also conducting the
following specialty clinical services:

2.Quit Smoking Clinic
3. TB Clinic
4. Sleep Disorder Clinic
5. Chronic Cough Clinic
6. COPD Rehabilitation Clinic





The Allergy Clinic has facilities for drug allergy testing and antigen testing. The Quit Smoking Clinic which is being conducted in coordination with the Psychology Department is meant to encourage smokers to stop smoking with the aid of motivation, medicines and counselling. The TB Clinic coordinates the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB. The sleep Disorder Clinic is involved in the diagnosis and management of sleep Disordered Breathing problems particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. It has facilities for conducting Limited Sleep Studies for the purpose. The COPD Rehabilitation Clinic is concerned with the implementation of pulmonary rehabilitation programmes for COPD patients in association with the physiotherapy department.

Another unique activity of the Department is the conduction of “Executive Lung Check-Up” programmes which is targeted at screening people for the presence of chest diseases among people who have been exposed to risk factors for the same as part of their life style or occupation.

The Department does play an important role in supporting the other major departments in the hospital as for example in pre-operative evaluation, post operative care, etc. It is also well supported by the Thoracic Surgery Department for Surgical Management of lung diseases where surgical intervention is required.
